Kollektiv InQdrt receives Swiss Performing Arts Award
Kollektiv InQdrt won the Swiss Performing Arts Award | June Johnson Newcomer Prize 2022! The award ceremony took place on Friday, October 21, 2022, at the Théâtre de Carouge.
InQdrt is a collective of traceurs and dance creators led by Aarau-based choreographer Isabelle Spescha. They were in residence with us in February 2022. Spescha has been running educational projects with young athletes for several years, developing her own distinctive artistic signature. The performers are professional parkour artists who had not previously worked in the field of dance. Through dance training, they learned to plan their usually highly impulsive jumps and movements in advance and to engage more choreographically.

Premiere of EFEU (QUATUOR) by ZOO/Thomas Hauert
The last two works by ZOO/Thomas Hauert (HOW TO PROCEED in 2018 and IF ONLY in 2020) form a kind of diptych in which the driving force of movement arises from the emotional states provoked by today’s world. With EFEU(formerly titled QUATUOR), the ensemble leaves aside the state of a troubled world to dive into the physical relationship between life and earth. Perhaps driven by the need to remember that humans are part of nature: a more concrete approach in which matter emerges directly from the performers’ bodies as they confront external forces and space. What unfolds is an abstract dramaturgy, closer to musical composition than theatrical narration.
In September 2022, ZOO/Thomas Hauert worked and rehearsed with us in residence in preparation for the premiere. The piece premiered on October 18, 2022, at Théâtre Les Tanneurs in Brussels.

TANZ Magazine reports on CocoonDance and their premiere “Runthrough”
The international ensemble CocoonDance was in residence with us from February 14–27, 2022, rehearsing for “Runthrough”, which premiered as part of the Tanzfestival STEPS.
At the Runthrough meetings, CocoonDance encounters very different artists during several months of research residencies. Together, they develop new movement concepts that ultimately lead to a performance at the 2022 STEPS Festival. The meetings and residencies continue in Zurich, Lausanne, and Geneva.
The goal is to explore new working methods and to engage in a dialogue that broadens one’s own perspective on the unfamiliar. Diversity and collaborative artistic exchange take center stage. These encounters not only become the driving force behind the gestures of this new project, but also expand the glossary of movement and open up pathways to other forms—where the characteristics, qualities, and perspectives of each body intertwine into a vibrant and powerful fabric. The artistic result on stage incorporates all of these qualities, yet is pushed to its limits by the skills of professional performers.
This video offers a glimpse into their work.

Dancer Jennie Boultbee Wins Folkwang Prize
The British dancer Jennie Boultbee from London won the Folkwang Prize 2021. The award was presented on December 13, 2021. From August 1–15, 2021, she was at the Residenzzentrum tanz+ together with Swiss dancer Nina Richard.
They worked on the project We Made a Solo. At the start of their research, they were interested in developing a shared practice that would allow them to communicate successfully with their bodies rather than with words. How can we coexist in a space? How much do we need to let go of our own identity and self-understanding in order to move forward together; and what then becomes our shared identity?
We warmly congratulate Jennie Boultbee and look forward to welcoming her back to our residency soon.
The magazine TANZ has now reported on this in its March issue. Read the article.

David Coria and Jann Gallois Celebrate Premiere at Théâtre National de Chaillot
The Spaniard David Coria and the French dancer Jann Gallois were at the Residenzzentrum tanz+ in August 2021 to prepare for the premiere of the piece Imperfecto. On February 11, 2022, they presented a contemporary flamenco interpretation to the audience at the Théâtre National de Chaillot.
Jann Gallois represents a generation with cross-genre skills that constantly push the boundaries of dance. David Coria, creator of the captivating ¡Fandango!, which was celebrated at Chaillot in 2020, enjoys blending different art forms. They brought their physicality and creative energy together for a hybrid project at the intersection of their respective styles. The eclectic movement vocabulary of one merges with the flamenco flair of the other.
At times refined, at times wild and curious, their bodies meet in a shared experience of mutual discovery and self-exploration. Their imperfection—hence the title—gives rise to a new emotion. It is a fascinating challenge for two extraordinary artists, supported by the inspired singing of David Lagos.
