In her work, Pei-Ling Kao explores cultural identity and migration in dance, responds to political and social issues and expresses her devotion to dance. What influence do choreographers exert on dancers? How free are dancers really? These questions will accompany her until the premiere, which is planned for May 2023 in San Francisco, USA.

Showcase im Aargauer Kunsthaus

On Thursday, 22 September 2022, Pei-Ling Kao gave an insight into her work during the residency. The location at the Aargauer Kunsthaus was perfect for this short performance. For the artist from Honolulu, Hawai'i, it was particularly exciting to exchange with the local audience. Professional dancers as well as people interested in culture were present at the showcase.

Research

Pei-Ling Kao's research project is the last iteration of the Trilogy - One Body, Five Dances, Six Perspectives III and centers the concept of “The Dancing Body Through The Lens of Postcolonialism”. It concerns ethnicity, people of color and criticism in the performing arts (dance). For the first and second phase, she asked different international choreographers to create a solo. Based on these works, she will create a new piece.

Pei-Ling Kao is a Taiwanese dance educator, dance-maker and performer. She is an associate professor of dance at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. She has been in the field of dance for over 30 years, learning different styles of dance to help intellectually and physically adapt herself to changes in the contemporary dance world. Her research and creative interests have been focusing on movement improvisation, the bicultural and hybrid movement, dance lineages, and interdisciplinary collaborations.
