About
Residencies – Tanz und Kunst Königsfelden
Residenzzentrum tanz+ was founded in 2020 as an interdisciplinary residency project for dance, choreography, music, and the performing arts under the umbrella of Tanz und Kunst Königsfelden. Initiated by choreographer Brigitta Luisa Merki, then artistic director of Tanz und Kunst Königsfelden, the center combined studios and a guest house in Baden. Thanks to the support of various partners and private donations, the year-round residency program was launched in March 2021.
Tanz und Kunst Königsfelden is a cultural institution based in Baden and the founder of a dance platform unique in Switzerland. Since its establishment in 2007, it has cultivated the diversity of professional dance in dialogue with other art forms. From its beginnings in cooperation with Museum Aargau to today, the institution has continuously evolved. In 2024, the artistic direction passed to choreographer Filipe Portugal, who is building on this legacy while opening new perspectives for the future.
Every two years, renowned international choreographers, visual artists, dancers, musicians, and composers create productions for the unique stage of the monastery church Königsfelden. International productions alternate with participatory art projects for children and young people from the region, making the institution both a creator of major artistic works and a hub for cultural education.
Restructuring and new perspectives
As part of a restructuring process, Tanz und Kunst Königsfelden streamlined its infrastructure and focused on its core artistic program. The studios that were previously part of the residency project are no longer under Tanz und Kunst Königsfelden’s management, and the Guest House has been retained as the organization’s base, now also hosting the office. The residencies that were previously offered under the name Residenzzentrum tanz+ will continue directly under the umbrella of Tanz und Kunst Königsfelden. Starting in 2026, they will take place in collaboration with Kurtheater Baden, whose rehearsal studio is fully equipped to support the creative process and offers an inspiring view over Baden. This new partnership ensures the continuation of the residency program within a sustainable framework, while providing artists with a professional environment and valuable opportunities to develop, present, and promote their work.
